A catalyst for the cathode of a fuel cell, a membrane electrode assembly containing the cathode, and a fuel cell system containing the membrane electrode assembly are provided to obtain an excellent catalytic efficiency even by lowering the content of platinum. A catalyst(50) for the cathode of a fuel cell comprises a core(52) comprising RuO2; and Se(56) and Pt(54) present on the surface of the core. Preferably RuO2 is crystalline or amorphous; the core comprising RuO2 has an average particle size of 5-20 nm; the Pt has an average particle size of 1-5 nm; and the catalyst has an average particle size of 6-30 nm. Preferably the ratio of Se and Pt is 1:4 to 1:19 by atom ratio. Preferably Pt is located on the surface of the core comprising RuO2, and Se surrounds it. |
