Aq. alkali solns. of Si-contg. ion-exchangers contg. units of formula (I) are new. Also claimed is the prepn. of such solns. by (i) converting crosslinked (I) to the OH form using a 0.01-1 M aq. alkali hydroxide soln.; (ii) washing the prod. to make it neutral and free of X ions; and (iii) treating it in water at 40-100 degrees C with a basic hydroxide to dissolve it. R<1> and R<2> = -R<5>-Si-(O)3 with N being connected via R<5> with the Si atom and the 3 free valencies of O being partly or fully satisfied by H or an alkali metal ion; R<5> = 1-10 C alkylene, 5-8 C cycloalkylene, -(CH2)n.cyclohexylene.(CH2)m-, or -(CH2)n.phenylene.(CH2)m-; n = 1-6 (no. of N-attached methylene gps.); m = 0-6; R<3> = as per R<1> and R<2> or H, 1-20 C alkyl or 5-8 C cycloalkyl; R<4> = H, 1-20 C alkyl or 5-8 C cycloalkyl; and X = a 1-3 valent anion. |
