PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain an ultraviolet luminous body having a luminescence peak at a specified wavelength by using an ion-exchangeable layered rubidium tantalate. SOLUTION: An ultraviolet luminous body having a luminescence peak at 340 nm is obtained. Ion-exchangeable layered rubidium tantalate (Rb4Ta6O17) has luminescent characteristics changeable by ion exchange and is useful as a host compound capable of undergoing various ion exchanges. Examples of preferable ions exchanged are rare earth ions such as Tbu3+, Eu3+, Pr3+, Dy3+, Re3+, and Sm3+. Ion-exchangeable layered rubidium tantalte having been subjected to ion exchange to Tb3+ exhibits green luminescence. Ion-exchangeable layered rubidium tantalate is obtained, e.g. by baking a mixture of Pb2CO3 and Ta2O5 in a platinum crucible at 1,470 K for 40 hr in air, cooling the baking product to 1,020 K in 40 hr, and leaving it in an oven until it is cooled to room temperature.
