PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To achieve heightened capacity of an alkaline battery and prevent degradation of heavy loading characteristics after storage. SOLUTION: As a positive electrode can of an alkaline battery, either a can of which one side is covered with silver plated layer 11 of cold-rolled steel plate 9 with both sides clad with nickel plated layer 10 and press-squeezed and ironed to be used as an inner face, or one of which the above silver plated layer 11 is put under heat treatment to have nickel-silver alloy plated layer 13 formed between the nickel plated layer and the silver plated layer and press- squeezed and ironed to be used as an inner face. As is necessary, further a conductive coating film 12 with graphite powder as a main ingredient is formed on the inside face. With the use of such positive electrode can, even the content of graphite powder in the positive electrode materials is reduced for higher capacity, inner resistance is not to be increased and so, degradation of heavy loading characteristics after storage can be prevented.
