PURPOSE: To obtain a polyarylate having a higher mol.wt. than that of the polymer obtained by an interfacial polymerization method in a shortened reaction time due to the wide surface by subjecting a prepolymer to an ultrasonic treatment in a specific solvent to crystallize the prepolymer and then subjecting the crystallized prepolymer to a solid polymerization. CONSTITUTION: In a method for producing a polyarylate from (A) a bisphenol (preferably bisphenol A) and (B) a diaryl dicarboxylate (preferably a diaryl isophthalate), the prepolymer having a reducing viscosityηSP/c of 0.1-0.4 is treated with ultrasonic waves in a solvent (preferably toluene) having a solvent parameter value of 8-10. The polyarylate is preferably produced by melt- polymerizing the component A with the component B, subjecting the obtained prepolymer having the above-mentioned reducing viscosity to the above- mentioned ultrasonic treatment for 2-3hrs, and subsequently subjecting the obtained crystallized prepolymer having a surface of >=2m<2> /g and a crystal melting point of >=210 deg.C to a solid polymerization treatment e.g. by a method comprising heating the prepolymer in the flow of N2 gas in a glass U-shaped pipe having an inner diameter of 100mm at the temperature of the glass transition temperature to the melting point.
