PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To selectively use various reading modes in one image reading apparatus by making a detached flat reader singly available by providing the flat reader attachable to and detachable from a double-sided image reading apparatus, and reading continuously fed documents using the image reading apparatus after the flat reader is detached therefrom. SOLUTION: An attachable and detachable flat reader including a first reading means is provided. A fall prevention member is provided for preventing a document from falling from an opening after the flat reader is detached. There are included a first reading mode during which a document is scanned and read by the first reading means and a second reading mode during which continuously fed documents are read by the stopped first reading means. During the second reading mode, rear sides of documents can be continuously read by a second reading means.
