An image display apparatus having a pointing function and a method thereof are provided to perform a pointing function efficiently by photographing an infrared region and a visible region at the same time. A photographing unit(100) includes a filter(105) through which the light of at least two wavelength areas penetrates. A camera image processor(110) outputs control information by processing an image signal from the photographing unit. According to the control information outputted from the image processing unit, a controller(170) controls the operation of an image display device. The camera processing unit calculates the pointing coordinates by extracting an image signal of an infrared region from the image signals outputted from the photographing unit.
