Currently the treatment for patients with terminal kidney disease (stage V) consists in renal replacement therapy (hemodialysis, peritoneal dialysis or kidney transplant) which is extraordinarily expensive and engenders poor quality of life. The present invention is a mixture of carboxylic acids: citric acid, succinic acid, fumaric acid and malic acid, and any of the possible combinations thereof. Said product is preferably administered orally or intravenously, in the treatment of patients with chronic kidney disease, hyperammonemia or human conditions involving a negative nitrogen balance. This product is useful for reducing the serum values of urea and serum ammonium, while at the same time, by transamination of the oxaloacetate formed via succinate, fumarate and malate, it promotes the biosynthesis of non-essential, amino acids, and by transamination of the alpha-ketoglutarate formed via citrate, it generates glutamic acid and the amino acids related to same such as glutamine. This treatment prevents, preserves and even improves kidney function. In other patients it delays the deterioration of the kidney failure and the urgent need for renal replacement therapy. In others, it is used as a treatment that complements the renal replacement therapy in order to improve the quality of life of the patient and to improve the laboratory parameters. |
