A solar module system coupled to a system load, the solar module system comprising: a string having a plurality of solar modules electrically coupled in series between a first output terminal and a second output terminal, wherein the string is configured to provide power to the system load from the second output terminal, wherein the string has a string open circuit voltage across the first and second output terminals, and wherein the string has an operating voltage across the first and second output terminals when the string is providing power to the system load; and a current shunting device electrically coupled to the second output terminal, the current shunting device having a controller, a relay, a dissipative load, and a voltage measurement device, wherein the controller is configured to close the relay and shunt electrical current from the second output terminal to the dissipative load when the voltage measurement device measures the string open circuit voltage across the first and second output terminals such that the string has a reduced open circuit voltage across the first and second output terminals, and wherein the reduced open circuit voltage is between the string open circuit voltage and the operating voltage.
