A printing machine prints on sheets of paper which are transferred from the machine to a stack by means of grippers attached to an endless chain. The sheets are guided by a device formed by two parallel tubes (10) which are mounted transversely to the direciton of travel of the sheet and extend over the width of the sheet. Each tube (10) has its interior maintained at a pressure greater than that of the atmosphere so that air flows out of the tubes (10) through radial holes (11) and supports the sheet (9) on an air cushion. The space (12) between the tubes is sealed by a plate (15) and sealing strips (14) and maintained at a pressure below that of the atmosphere.
