PURPOSE: To obtain the subject compound in high yield, useful as a physiologically active substance, a raw material for e.g. liquid crystals, by making microbes capable of epoxide asymmetric resolution act on a racemic epihalohydrin in an organic solvent followed by taking an optically active form accumulated in the organic solvent. CONSTITUTION: Microbes capable of epoxide asymmetric resolution [e.g. Mycobacterium sp. E-1-17-2 (FERM P-14749)] is added to a racemic epihalohydrin (e.g. epichlorohydrin) in an organic solvent (e.g. water-saturated heptanol) followed by conducting a shaking culture at 30 deg.C for 48h, and the resultant reaction liquor is then centrifuged to remove the microbes, the organic solvent layer of the resultant supernatant is dispensed, and an optically active epihalohydrin accumulated in the organic solvent is then separated and taken by such means as phase separation, extraction or distillation, thus easily obtaining in high yield the objective optically active epihalohydrin with high optical purity useful as a raw material for e.g. medicines, agrochemicals physiologically active substances, ferroelectric liquid crystal materials, etc. |
