The arrangement has a beam transmitter with a movement arrangement enabling the beam axis to describe the side of a cone. bounding the location field, an arrangement for forming elementary beams and a receiver enabling evaluation of an object's position from received elementary beams. An arrangement of thick plates (L3) with parallel surfaces is inclined wrt. the axis (XX') to divide the output beam into sectors representing sub-beams that are offset wrt. the output beam axis to a defined extent. A modulator (D) modulates the sub-beams differently. The beams are recombined via further plates (L8) and lenses (L9,L10) to a single beam of the same dia and cross-section as the output beam and deflected to produce a useful motion. The cone angle can be varied with a variable focal length objective (L13,L14).
