PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a wide retardation film, capable of appropriately controlling even a retardation observed in an oblique direction, having uniformity of in-plane optical characteristics and applicable even to a large liquid crystal display. SOLUTION: A method for manufacture a retardation film is provided, the film comprising a single sheet of film, having refractive index, in the longitudinal direction of the film at 590 nm wavelength, larger than the refractive index in the film width direction, having a specified wavelength dependence of retardation and having a small NZ and a small photoelasticity modulus, wherein the film used shows a small birefringence in the plane and thickness directions prior to stretching.
