Provided are a method and an apparatus for allocating time resource in a time division multiple access (TDMA). A mobile station receives a synchronization signal, detects a synchronization symbol from the received synchronization signal, and calculates the correlation between the detected synchronization symbol and an upward link synchronization symbol. Also, the mobile station calculates a determination metric based on the correlation and determines whether the synchronization symbol is detected based on the determination metric. The mobile station occupies time resource according to whether to detect the synchronization symbol.
