PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To allow a user to more easily access to a file in a file management method and a file management system virtually organizing a single directory tree based on a plurality of directory trees. SOLUTION: A detection means (a CPU 141 or the like) detects a plurality of HDD 2 connected to a PC 1, the detection means (the CPU 141 or the like) reads the directory tree from each of the detected plurality of HDD 2. A creating means (the CPU 141 or the like) retrieves the same name folder in the same hierarchy from the highest order hierarchy in order in the directory tree, takes the same name folders in the retrieved same hierarchy as one folder, and creates a virtual directory tree by repeating the operation of writing a folder of a lower order hierarchy corresponding to the folder in the folder concerned.
