<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus capable of preventing a toner case from becoming empty of toner suddenly by displaying the quantity of toner in the toner case in an analog manner. <P>SOLUTION: When the inside of the toner case 38 is filled with toner, the number (A) of samples from which toner (Hi level) is detected is 108 per one rotation of an agitator 62. As the toner in the toner case 38 is used, the container becomes empty of the toner. However, the number (B) of samples from which the toner is detected per one rotation of the agitator 62 decreases. When the number (B) of samples from which the toner is detected per one rotation of the agitator 62 has become equal to or below a first reference number (C), which is a threshold, it is assumed as the NG number (D). When the NG number (D) result in a second reference number (N) in succession, a CPU 12 determines that the toner case 38 is empty.
