This washing machine comprises: a wash tub that holds laundry and rotates; an outer tank that holds the wash tub; a detergent receiver into which a detergent is introduced; a dirt sensor that detects an amount of dirt of a washing liquid; and a control unit that sequentially controls a water supplying step, a washing step, a rinsing step, and a spinning step. The control unit is configured so as to control the sensitivity of the dirt sensor on the basis of output from the dirt sensor when a water level of the outer tank reaches a predetermined water level or when a predetermined time has passed since the start of the supply of water in the water supplying step. Consequently, turbidity of the washing liquid can be accurately measured using a range of better resolving power of the dirt sensor.
