An ignition device (1) for a safety system, especially an air bag or a safety seat belt tightener of a motor vehicle, with an ignition element (2) which can be ignited through connecting means, especially connecting conductors (4, 5), is improved in regard to its automatable manufacture and enhanced reliability of operation in that the ignition element (2) is disposed and preinstalled with the connecting means in an igniter housing (3), the igniter housing (3) being insertable into the safety system at an appropriate place.
