PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To stably produce cresol and xylenol each methylated at the m- or p-position for a long period without deteriorating the activity of a catalyst. SOLUTION: This method for producing the cresol and the xylenol each methylated at the m- or p-position comprises (1) methylating (transalkylating) a phenol compound of raw material such as phenol or o-cresol with a methylating agent selected from anisol, cresol, xylenol, trimethylphenol or methanol, (2) isomerizing a phenol compound selected from anisol, cresol, xylenol and trimethylphenol, or (3) methylating and isomerizing (transalkylating) the above- described phenol compound of raw material with at least two kinds of compounds selected from methylating agents and phenol compounds, wherein the reactions and isomerizations are carried out by bringing them into contact with a solid catalyst at reaction temperature of 350 to 700 deg.C at a reaction pressure of >=5 MPa.
