<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus capable of reducing a non-printing area at the leading edge of recording material in a transporting direction when the recording material has such stiffness that can be separated from a fixing roller according to thickness dimension. <P>SOLUTION: The image forming apparatus is equipped with a printing control part 15, a recording material transporting part 5, an image forming part 1, a transfer part 3, a fixing part 4 and a recording material thickness detection part 9 detecting the thickness dimension of the recording material, and the printing control part 15 has a recording material non-printing area detection part 42 detecting whether or not the dimension of the non-printing area on the leading edge side of the recording material in the transporting direction is less than a prescribed value in terms of image data for printing, and a leading edge area printing judgement part 43 judging whether or not printing can be performed in an area whose dimension is less than a prescribed value on the leading edge side of the recording material in the transporting direction according to the thickness dimension of the recording material when the non-printing area is less than the prescribed value.
