摘要 PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an external electrode fluorescent lamp (EEFL) having no defects as in a conventional technology. SOLUTION: The external electrode fluorescent lamp for illuminating a background of a display or a screen includes a covered glass and/or a (partial) coating on an inner face of the covered glass wherein a work function W<SB>a</SB>has low values in a range such as <6 eV, preferably, <5 eV, more preferably, 0 eV<W<SB>a</SB><5 eV, especially preferably, 0 eV<W<SB>a</SB><4 eV, and the most preferably 0 eV<W<SB>a</SB><3 eV.
