<p>PURPOSE:To obtain a new phenol derivative useful as an intermediate for ferroelectric liquid crystal materials, exhibiting properties as a ferroelectric liquid crystal at low-temperature area and excellent in characteristics such as high speed responsiveness. CONSTITUTION:A compound of formula I [R1 is H or an OH protecting group; R2 is H or a 1-20C alkyl or a 2-20C alkoxyalkyl which may be substituted by halogen, respectively; m, p, q, r, s and t are 0 or 1; n is 0-10; A1 to A3 are formula II to formula VII (i is 0-3), etc.; when A1 is a condensed ring, p+q is 0 or 1 and A2 and A3 are single rings and when A1 is single ring, p+q is 1 or 2 and when p+q is 2, A2 and A3 are single rings], e.g. (-)-5- acetoxy-2-(4-(6-hydroxy-1-heptyl)-phenyl)pyrimidine. The compound is obtained by reacting a compound of formula VIII [X is halogen, OCOCF3 or OSO2R' (R' is alkyl or phenyl)] with acetylenes of formula IX in the presence of a Pd catalyst and a basic substance and hydrogenating the resultant compound of formula X.</p> |
