PURPOSE:To obtain a lubricant for a driving system, such as a gasoline engine oil, an automatic transmission oil, or a gear oil, which has a long life, is suitable for a high-horsepower automobile, and can reduce the fuel consumption by compounding a compsn. obtd. by grafting a mono- or dialkyl maleate or fumarate onto an alpha-olefin copolymer. CONSTITUTION:A graft polymer compsn. is obtd. by grafting at least one compd. selected from the group consisting of monoalkyl and dialkyl maleates and fumarates (provided at least one alkyl group is 8-18C linear alkyl) onto an alpha-olefin copolymer having a number average mol.wt. of 10,000-50,000 and a mol. wt. distribution represented by the ratio of wt. average mol.wt. to number average mol.wt. of 3 or lower (e.g. an ethylene-propylene copolymer having an ethylene content of 30-70wt.%) at 100-200 deg.C using a chain transfer agent for radical polymn. in the presence of an org. peroxide as a radical polymn. initiator. |
