PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for recovering terephthalic acid from a pulverized product of a recovered polyethylene terephthalate by which the recovery ratio of the terephthalic acid is high and the treating time is short. SOLUTION: This method for recovering the terephthalic acid from a produced terephthalate comprises a reactional degradation step of reacting and degrading the pulverized product of the recovered polyethylene terephthalate in the presence of an alkali in an equimolar amount or an excess of the polyethylene terephthalate into the terephthalate and ethylene glycol in a solvent. the reactional degradation step includes many stages of two or more stages.
