<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce the weight and cost without deteriorating thermal uniformity of the entire device in a device equipped with a light source such as a backlight device. <P>SOLUTION: The backlight device irradiating the back face of a transmissive display panel with light comprises: a light source substrate 14 mounting a light source 30 and disposed opposite to the back face of the display panel; a base member 17 made of a sheet metal, on which the light source substrate 14 is placed, and fixed to the rear part 16 of the chassis of the backlight device; and heat pipes 18 attached to the base member 17 and transmitting the heat generating in the light source 30 through the base member 17. The base member 17 has a plurality of grooves 22 disposed at a prescribed interval and extended in the longitudinal direction of the light source substrate 14, and a plurality of planes 21 between the grooves 22, where the light source substrate 14 is placed opposite to the display panel.
