A transducer may be located in a rail (Figure 3) or in a railway vehicle. The transducer may monitor weight, stress, temperature, vibration and acceleration in three axes. The device may be located on a journal box a on a side frame b. The transducer may have pair of strain gauges mounted in a barrel. The gauges may be located on the neutral axis of the device that is being measured to reduce influence of corrupting influences, such as torsion and bending. The output signals may be amplified, digitised and analysed. Signals may be transmitted via a telemetry system and the device may carry a dry cell power source. The device is intended to give an indication of vibration and temperature associated with wheel, rail, bearing or suspension components which may provide early warning of likely failure. |
