PURPOSE:To efficiently produce a poly(a-olefin) by using a catalyst component obtained by catalytically reacting an organometallic compound with a specific transition metal compound having, as a ligand, a group having a conjugated pielectron system and bringing the reactional product into contact with water- free aluminum oxide having a specific particle size. CONSTITUTION:An alpha-olefin is polymerized using a catalyst component obtained by catalytically reacting an organometallic compound with a transition metal compound represented by formula I or II and bringing the reactional product into contact with waterfree aluminum oxide having a surface area of 15 to 300m<2>/g. In the formulae, A and B may be the same or different and each is an unsaturated hydrocarbon group coordinated to the central atom; A' and B' are the same as A and B; R is a divalent linear hydrocarbon group which may have a side chain and in which one or more of the backbone carbon atoms have been replaced by a silicon, germanium, or tin atom; X is a 1-10C hydrocarbon group; and M is a metal atom selected from those of Groups IV and V of the periodic table. |
