PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a Pb-free hot dip Sn-Zn based plated steel sheet which has excellent corrosion resistance and has characteristics particularly suitable as those of an automobile fuel tank material. SOLUTION: The hot dip Sn based plated steel sheet is obtained by forming a hot dip plating layer comprising, by mass, 1 to 8.9% Zn, and the balance 91.2 to 99.0% Sn with inevitable impurities on the surface of a steel sheet. The surface roughness of the plating is≤32μm by RM, and aβ-Sn single phase accounts for≥20% in the area ratio of the projecting part. The coating weight of the plating is 10 to 100 g/m<SP>2</SP>per side, and the surface of the steel sheet can be provided with a chemical conversion coating or a resin coating by≤2 g/m<SP>2</SP>in total per side.
