PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain branched chain unsaturated aldehyde reduced in the produc tion of straight chain unsaturated aldehyde such as crotonaldehyde with good selectivity from acetaldehyde and saturated aldehyde. SOLUTION: The cross aldol condensation reaction of acetaldehyde and saturated aldehyde represented by formula R<2> -CH2 -CHO (R<1> is a 1-6C straight chain alkyl group) is performed in the presence of a zeolite supported base compsn. wherein alkali metal is supported on a zeolite compsn. and, subsequently, branched chain unsaturated aldehydes represented by formula CH3 -CH=CR<1> CHO and formula R<1> -CH2 -CH=CR<1> CHO are synthesized by dehydration reaction.
