PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a ceramic of a new composition having the identical crystal structure and also high electrical conductivity by ionic substitution through the addition of an oxide as a 3rd component based on the fact that a cerium oxide with its oxidation state of +4 (CeO2) is easily reduced by solid phase reaction with V2O5 in air to form CeVO4 having tetragonal structure containing cerium of oxidation state +3 and the CeVO4 is an electroconductive ceramic. SOLUTION: This electroconductive compound cerium oxide ceramic has a tetragonal structure represented by the formulas Ce1-xCaxVO4-(x/2)(0<x<=0.41), Ce1-ySryVO4-(y/2)(0<y<=0.21), Ce1-zPbzVO4-(z/2) (0<z<=0.1), Ce1-wBiwVO4(0< w<=0.67). The ceramic is obtained by mixing the corresponding starting materials together followed by heating the mixture in air to carry out a solid phase reaction to produce a solid solution of the corresponding oxide ceramics of the respective general formulas.
