A safety system for use with buildings is disclosed which enables a safety rail to be located about the periphery of the building during construction. The safety system includes a stanchion (13, 110) which has a sleeve (11, 114) which is slidably engaged on a beam or post (10, 102). The beam or post (10, 102) engages with a building frame (16, 130, 140). In one embodiment, clamp plates (12a, 12b) and flange plates (14a, 14b) cooperate to sandwich the frame to secure the tube (10). In other embodiments, an abutment plate (104) engages beneath the frame member and the beam (102) is secured to the frame member by a bolt (108).
