The DSL network (200) includes a loop extender (224) with communications, control, and diagnostic functionality, and a central office (202) including a Digital Subscriber Line Access Multiplexer (DSLAM) (604) and a central office controller couples to the loop extender (224) via a local loop (214) for controlling the loop extender (224).
