Anemia continues to be a major public health problem among children in many regions of the world, considerably more prevalent in developing countries and it is still not clear which strategy to treat is most effective. Iron deficiency is associated with a high risk of long-term impairment in mental and motor development, as reflected in poor school performance: lower IQ test scores, lack of concentration, short attention span and easy distractibility. In the Philippines, the prevalence of anemia among 6 months to [1 y and 1 y 11 months old children, presently alarming high at 66 pcnt and 53. pcnt , respectively, and continued to increase. Hence, we formulated a unique combination, comprising a novel iron preparation, Iron Polymaltose Complex (IPC) with Folic Acid and Ascorbic Acid. IPC in some clinical studies showed equal bioavailability as ferrous sulfate and showed more tolerable side effects. Folic acid and ascorbic acid, in this preparation, will potentiate the good effect of IPC during the treatment of anemia. Incorporating Folic Acid in the preparatioin also addresses another common micronutrient deficiency which falls second to iron. |
