A fire in a building can be extinguished or smothered by means of sheets of flame resistant material which are used to cover the building so that all openings such as windows or doors are sealed and oxygen from the surrounding air is prevented from reaching the fire. The flexible material is in the form of roller blinds (2) attached to the walls near their junctions with the roof. When the seat of the fire is not in a building, the fire may be covered with a hood of flame resistant material in order to cut off the oxygen supply. USE/ADVANTAGE - Fire extinguishing method which is especially applicable to chemical fires or burning oil or gas wells.
