An axial row of holes in a central pipe discharge fluid into, and receive returning fluid from the flow channel in a filter candle formed from spirally wound membranes. The flow channel is divided into at least two superimposed flow sections above and below a flexible fluid-tight strip partition at an angle to the candle axis, producing flow paths which progressively decrease or increase in cross-sectional area, with consequent acceleration or deceleration of fluid flow rate. One end of the strip, which may be helical, is bonded to the central pipe, with the other end forming a turning point short of the closed candle end.
