A controller of an internal combustion engine that performs catalyst warm-up control to promote warm-up of an exhaust purification catalyst is provided. The controller carries out the catalyst warm-up control by retarding the ignition timing after increasing the throttle opening degree when a prescribed performing condition is satisfied. The controller corrects the fuel injection amount to an increased value in the period from when the performing condition is met to when the ignition timing is retarded.
