A method for controlling an automatic lathe having at least one main spindle and at least one tool rest comprising the steps of preparing data on movement positions of at least one main spindle and at least one tool rest required by a series of machining programs in one of the two forms one of which is cum reference data for designating the movement positions as a function of the amount of rotation of the cum and the other of which is time reference data for designating the movement positions as a function of the elapsed time, designating the time-series arrangement of the cum reference data and the time reference data in the series of machining programs, processing the cum reference data and the time reference data in accordance with the time-series arrangement, and controlling the relative feed in the machining programs of at least one main spindle and at least one tool rest.
