摘要 <P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an illumination device and a projection image display device in each of which illuminance non-uniformity of illumination light on an optical modulation element can be smoothly and effectively suppressed. <P>SOLUTION: The illumination device includes: a light source part (laser beam source 11) for emitting light with an intensity distribution approximately uniform in a first direction; and a fly-eye lens 12 on which the light is made incident, wherein the light source part (laser beam source 11) and the fly-eye lens 12 are arranged such that the first direction is inclined with respect to vertical or horizontal direction of arrangement of lens cells in the fly-eye lens 12. As compared to when arranging the light source part (laser beam source 11) and the fly-eye lens 12 such that the first direction is parallel with respect to vertical or horizontal direction of arrangement of lens cells, the number of superimposition pattern in the fly-eye lens 12 increases and the uniformizing effect of light can be improved. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2009,JPO&INPIT
