A pipe-fitting comprises a socket (32) which includes sealing means (38) and retention means (44) within a bore of the socket (32). The retention means (44) comprises a tapered camming part (42) and a gripping part (46) for gripping a pipe inserted within the socket (32). The gripping part is inter-operable with, and axially movable relative to, the tapered camming part (42). A portion (50) of the gripping part (44) is arranged to cam with a portion of the tapered camming part (42) having a dissimilar profile during axial movement of the gripping part relative to the tapered camming part (42) thereby causing radial contraction of the gripping part (44). The configuration thus provided enables the gripping part to grip a pipe spigot strongly, without jamming of the camming surfaces.
