<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To restrain displacement of an optical system unit side cover and a main body side cover by causing the main body side cover to follow the optical system unit side cover even when the height of the optical system unit is adjusted by a height adjusting means. <P>SOLUTION: An image forming apparatus includes: an image forming apparatus body; an upper frame 16d disposed on the upper side of the image forming apparatus body and used for placing an optical system unit for reading images; an optical system unit 20 placed on the upper frame 16d via a height adjusting means 1, adjusted in the height of one side by a height adjusting means 1, and integrally having the optical system unit side cover 21, by which at least the side is covered; and the main body side cover 160 covering the side 11b of the image forming apparatus body and the side of the upper frame 16d and disposed so as to be swingable around a shaft member 160c perpendicular to the side of the upper frame 16d. The optical system unit side cover 21 and the main body side cover 160 are vertically disposed adjacent to each other.
