A codebook design method for a multiple input multiple output system and a method for using the codebook are provided to improve a data transfer rate by using an optimized codebook according to the channel environment, transmission ranks or the number of transmission ranks. A codebook is read out from a memory, and a codebook includes a codeword matrixes having 4x1 dimension. The transmitted data stream is precoded based on at least one codeword matrix among the codeword matrixes included in the codebook(S350).
