Abstract A lock 100 for securing closures such as sliding doors comprises a housing 110, at least one locking element 120a, 120b and a gear system 130 for moving the at least one locking element 120a, 120b between a locking position and a retracted position. The gear system 130 includes a gear wheel 150 rotatable about an axis A in meshing engagement with at least one rack gear 160a, 160b such that rotation of the gear wheel 150 causes linear movement of the at least one rack gear 160a, 160b which, in turn, moves the at least one locking element 120a, 120b between the locking and retracted positions. The gear wheel teeth 154 form a pitch surface having a variable diameter along the axis of rotation A.
