PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an electrode for an electrochemical element having an undercoat layer which has a reduced contact resistance in a thickness direction while keeping a low resistance in a surface direction and a method for manufacturing the same; and to provide a coating material for an underlayer.SOLUTION: An electrode contains a collector, an underlayer formed on the surface of the collector, and an active material layer formed on the surface of the underlayer. The underlayer contains an amorphous granular carbon material, and carbon fibers. The spherical carbon material is obtained, for instance, by making an aldehyde compound react with a phenol compound in the presence of an acid catalyst and a protective colloid agent to produce particles formed of a phenol resin, heating the particles and thereby curing the phenol resin to produce cured particles, and carbonizing the cured particles.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 1 |
