Production of an operating, decorative or display element involves applying a paint layer (2) onto a transparent substrate (1) and then directing a laser beam onto the opposite side of the substrate so that the beam passes through the substrate to the paint layer to effect partial removal of the layer and produce an inscription or decoration. Preferably, the substrate is a transparent article of glass or thermoplastics, especially polymethyl methacrylate, polyolefin, polyamide, polymethacrylate, polystyrene, polyvinyl acetate, polyurethane or their copolymers.
