The method involves determining whether a motor vehicle resides in a starting condition based on predetermined criteria, while an engine of the vehicle is driven in a speed control mode. Another different speed control mode is activated independent of the presence of an accelerator pedal actuation, when the starting condition of the motor vehicle is determined. The engine is driven in the latter speed control mode in such a manner that the engine works against a speed drop by a faster supply of an additional torque in comparison with the former speed control mode. An independent claim is also included for a device for controlling a drive chain in a motor vehicle.
