PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a starting device for an internal combustion engine capable of appropriately inhibiting excessive load from being applied on a starting device by suitably estimating reverse rotation of a crankshaft. SOLUTION: Speed drop quantityΔNE1 which is difference between first rotation speed NE1 at a point of time of suspension of combustion of air fuel mixture and second engine rotation speed NE2 after a predetermined period of timeαelapses from the suspension of combustion of the air fuel mixture is calculated, and reverse rotation torque action period RP during which reverse rotation torque of a crankshaft acts on the starting device is estimated based on the speed drop quantityΔNE.
