PURPOSE:To carry out the alkylation reaction of an aromatic compound with an olefin under relatively mild conditions without requiring the drying of the raw materials. CONSTITUTION:An alkyl-substituted aromatic compound is produced by reacting an aromatic compound with an olefin at 0-200 deg.C (preferably 50-150 deg.C) in the presence of a trifluoromethane sulfonic acid salt of at least one kind of element selected from Sc, Y, La and lanthanoid series elements. The amount of the trifluoromethane sulfonic acid salt is preferably 0.1-50mol%, especially 1-20mol% based on the olefin. The paraselectivity in the alkylation of a substituted aromatic compound can be increased by carrying out the above reaction in the presence of a protonic acid (e.g. sulfuric acid, phosphoric acid and trifluoromethane sulfonic acid). The amount of the protonic acid is preferably 0.1-3mol based on 1mol of the trifluoromethane sulfonic acid salt. |
