PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an improved construction which provides better location of a ball of a total hip prosthesis. SOLUTION: The total hip prosthesis comprises a a part-spherical cup 1 in which a part-spherical ball head 3 is attached to a part-spherical inner bearing surface 2. The ball head 3 has a substantially flat surface 14 cooperating with the ball head, and the substantially flat surface 14 is formed as a flat cordal lower surface parallel to the plane of an equator of the ball 3. Prior to the attachment of the ball head 3 to the spigot of a stem, the flat surface 14 allows the ball 3 to be located in the cup 2 to an appropriate part, the flat on the ball head 3 faces a mouth 8 of the cup, and the ball is then held in the cup 1 by extension portions 9 and 10 which extend beyond a diametrical equator E.
