PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for quickly and accurately adjusting a tappet clearance by judging whether the rotation angle of a crankshaft and the lift of a valve are in an appropriate relation or not. SOLUTION: A line segment A indicating an upper limit value of tolerance and a line segment B indicating a lower limit value of the tolerance are drawn as inspection quantity lines beforehand, and a line segment C indicating actual measured value and the inspection quantity lines are compared. In an embodiment, since change of the lift of the valve is smallest when a position right after the valve opens or right before the valve closes is defined as a reference of rotation angle of a crankshaft, it is judged whether the lift of the valve at that time is between the line segments A and B, and an adjuster screw is rotated and the tappet clearance is adjusted by a nut runner 30 provided on a robot 3 if the lift of the valve is between the line segments or in an adjustment range.
