<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a printing plate material having a clear printed image, good developing properties on a machine and a good plate wear, no smudging on a non-imaging part, and excellent printability, and a method for developing it. <P>SOLUTION: The printing plate material has a thermal image forming layer which can be developed on the machine on an aluminum substrate applied by a roughening processing. The surface of the aluminum substrate applied by the roughening processing is boehmite-treated to generate boehmite projections, and a mean height of the projections of the boehmite generated is 30-200 nm, and a mean diameter of the bottom faces is 10-100 nm.
